For university-sponsored student residence in the UAE, the educational institution acts as your sponsor or host and helps arrange the application. You do not necessarily need to transfer to university sponsorship if you already qualify to study under a resident parent’s sponsorship. These are separate residence routes, and both remain subject to immigration requirements.
Start by asking the university’s visa office which route applies to you, who will submit the application and what you must do yourself. Request a written checklist before making travel arrangements or cancelling an existing residence permit.
Who sponsors the visa, and who approves it?
The university sponsors the ordinary institution-sponsored student residence permit; it does not grant immigration approval itself. Dubai’s GDRFA student service describes the educational institution as the student’s host and guarantor and requires the institution to be licensed, with approval from the competent educational authority. Government application channels include GDRFA Dubai and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, known as ICP.
Ask which authority will handle your residence file. For Dubai applications, open the GDRFA student residence permit service. For applications handled by ICP, use its residence permit service and select the relevant category: the page covers several residence routes, not just students.
Before paying a deposit, check the university and programme’s accreditation. Ask separately whether the institution will sponsor students on your particular programme and study schedule.
| Your situation | Residence route to discuss | What to establish first |
|---|---|---|
| You need residence sponsorship to attend university | Institution-sponsored student residence | Whether the institution will sponsor your programme |
| You already hold valid parent-sponsored residence | Continued family sponsorship, if eligible | Whether you still meet the applicable family/student conditions |
| You are changing university or sponsor | A coordinated residence change | The cancellation and new-application sequence |
University sponsorship and parent sponsorship are both recognised study routes. If changing between them, confirm the immigration process with the authority rather than treating it as an administrative change to your student record.
Documents to prepare
Use the university’s current checklist alongside the relevant government service requirements. This preparation list does not mean every application needs exactly the same attachments. GDRFA and ICP present the student requirements differently.
Identity and study documents
Prepare:
- A clear passport copy. ICP’s residence service specifies at least six months’ passport validity.
- A recent colour photograph meeting the application specifications; GDRFA specifies a white background.
- A university or institute certificate confirming enrolment and the study duration.
- The institution’s sponsorship or hosting letter, where required.
- Any educational-authority approval documents that the institution must supply.
- Valid health insurance accepted for the application.
Ask the visa office which documents it prepares and which you must obtain. Check that your name, date of birth and passport number match across the application.
Residence-stage documents
GDRFA’s student residence checklist also includes an approved medical fitness result and an Emirates ID application receipt. These are part of the residence process; they do not replace the institution’s enrolment evidence.
Keep copies of any existing residence permit, Emirates ID and entry permit ready for the visa office to review. If changing sponsorship, ask what cancellation or status-adjustment evidence is needed before starting either transaction.
Keep admissions paperwork in a separate folder. Ask whether academic certificates need attestation or recognition for your admission, rather than assuming every academic document is an immigration requirement. The guide to certificate attestation and qualification recognition explains the distinctions. Likewise, resolve any English-language admission requirements with admissions staff rather than the immigration authority.
From admission to residence approval
Use this sequence as a planning checklist. Ask the sponsor to confirm the order for your file, especially if you are already in the UAE.
- Confirm sponsorship. Obtain written confirmation that the institution will handle your student residence application.
- Agree the entry or status arrangements. Ask what permission you need before travelling, or what change is needed to your existing status.
- Submit the requested documents. Keep the application reference and payment receipts.
- Complete medical fitness screening when required. Attend the approved service specified for your application.
- Complete the Emirates ID application and any biometric appointment. Keep the receipt available for the residence submission.
- Check the final approval. Verify your personal details, sponsor and expiry date, then follow the card-delivery instructions.
Government channels provide entry-permit applications, while ICP’s residence issuance service links the residence application with Emirates ID and describes residence approval followed by ID issuance and delivery. Do not treat an application receipt as final residence approval.
Medical fitness and Emirates ID
Medical fitness screening
Residence applicants aged 18 and above must undergo the required medical fitness examination. Book the residency screening service through an approved provider; do not assume a general health check will satisfy it.
For its residency screening service, Emirates Health Services lists a passport-type photograph and a valid passport or Emirates ID, with Emirates ID required for renewal. Its process includes an appointment, the required examination and radiology, and results sent electronically. Follow the provider’s instructions on documents and attendance.
Emirates ID application
ICP issues Emirates ID. Its new-card service includes fingerprint and signature procedures for applicants aged 15 and above. Follow the instructions for your application rather than assuming the medical appointment also completes your identity registration.
Use the ICP new Emirates ID service to check the current documents and process. If you already have an Emirates ID, give the details to the visa office and ask how it will handle the existing record.
Studying while sponsored by a parent
A resident parent can sponsor an eligible student; university attendance does not automatically require university sponsorship. The UAE Government’s study-residence guidance says male students over 25 may remain under parental sponsorship with evidence of attendance at a higher education institution. It also says unmarried daughters may continue under parental sponsorship for study regardless of age. Confirm the conditions for your particular family file with ICP or GDRFA.
Ask what enrolment evidence is needed at renewal. Also check the parent’s residence expiry: a dependant’s residence cannot extend beyond the sponsoring parent’s permit. Adult dependants remain subject to the applicable medical fitness requirements.
If a parent plans to cancel their residence, discuss your next route before that happens. Ask the university whether it can sponsor you and get the authority’s instructions on the transition.
Part-time work and internships need separate checks
Do not treat student residence as automatic permission to take a job. The UAE Government’s MoHRE-provided guidance sets out a separate framework for employing and training students, including contracts and supporting documents. Before accepting part-time work, ask the employer which permit applies and get confirmation before starting.
The published student framework includes valid UAE residence for expatriates, evidence of student status, medical fitness documentation and guardian consent for students aged 15–18. For training, it also lists a no-objection certificate from the educational institution. Read the official student employment and training guidance, including its restrictions on the timing and duration of student employment.
Ask specifically about term-time work, internships and the proposed hours; do not assume another country’s student working-hours allowance applies. For study planning alongside an established job, see studying while working full-time.
Fees, renewal and leaving your course
Check current government charges on the relevant GDRFA or ICP service page. Request an itemised university quotation separating immigration charges, medical screening, Emirates ID, insurance and any institutional administration charge. Do not mistake a residence issuance fee for the full cost of the process.
Record the expiry date on your actual permit. Ask the sponsor when to begin preparing for renewal and what it needs to confirm continued study. Sponsors must arrange renewal before residence expires.
Before graduating, withdrawing or transferring, request written instructions covering cancellation, any replacement residence application and your last permitted day of stay. Official pages describe grace periods in different contexts, including cancellation and completion of study. Confirm the period for your own file rather than relying on a general online figure.
