To qualify as an ACCA member, you must complete the required exams, the Ethics and Professional Skills Module and relevant practical experience. Under the structure in place in September 2026, there are 13 exams before exemptions. Passing the exams alone does not meet the membership requirements.
For UAE students, the first decisions are where to enter, which exemptions to claim and how to combine study with relevant work. If you are still comparing accounting routes, use the ACCA or CMA comparison before committing to tuition.
ACCA structure: what you need to complete
The current examination route has three levels. Applied Knowledge introduces accounting and business concepts; Applied Skills builds technical competence; Strategic Professional combines advanced technical work with business judgement.

This table describes the current qualification, not the redesigned route launching in 2027.
Plan for the 2027 transition
ACCA’s published timeline identifies June 2027 as the final sitting of the current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional session exams. Redesigned Foundations and Knowledge exams begin in July 2027, followed by Expertise and Strategic Professional exams in September 2027.
The redesigned Strategic Professional level requires one Options exam rather than two. ACCA says students will receive credit for completed elements under its transition rules. Before buying a long tuition package, review the official transition timeline and use ACCA’s transition tool to map your expected progress. Do not assume the new option requirement already applies in 2026.
Entry routes: school qualifications, FIA and CAT
Direct entry to ACCA
The published minimum is two A levels and three GCSEs, or equivalent qualifications, across five separate subjects including English and mathematics. Check ACCA’s minimum entrance requirements database for your actual school-leaving qualification: living in the UAE does not determine which education-system requirements apply to you. A university degree is not compulsory.
Prepare your educational certificates, transcripts and identity documents. Documents not in English require an official translation alongside the originals. Wait for ACCA’s registration confirmation before committing to tuition for a particular starting level.
Foundations in Accountancy
Foundations in Accountancy, or FIA, has no minimum academic entry requirements. ACCA recommends starting with the introductory diploma at RQF Level 2 if you have no formal qualifications, particularly after a long break from study. FIA is a group of awards, not one universal foundation exam.
The sequence includes diplomas at RQF Levels 2 and 3, followed by the ACCA Diploma in Accounting and Business at RQF Level 4. The latter covers Business and Technology (FBT), Management Accounting (FMA) and Financial Accounting (FFA), alongside Foundations in Professionalism. Ask ACCA to confirm your progression arrangements before paying for a package described simply as “foundation to ACCA”.
Is CAT compulsory?
Certified Accounting Technician, or CAT, is a distinct award within the foundation-level route, not a compulsory stage for every ACCA student. Its current requirements combine the three FIA diplomas, two specialist options from audit, taxation and financial management, Foundations in Professionalism and one year of relevant practical experience.
Choose CAT deliberately if you want that technician qualification. Do not assume that every FIA course includes CAT status, or that a foundation ethics module replaces the main qualification’s ethics requirement. Ask providers to identify the exact award and its requirements in writing.
Exemptions for degree holders
Under the current qualification, ACCA can award exemptions from up to nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams. There are no exemptions from Strategic Professional exams. A degree title alone does not establish entitlement: the institution, programme, graduation year and modules studied matter.
Use this sequence:
- Open ACCA’s exemption calculator through its official exemptions guidance.
- Match the institution, qualification and graduation year precisely.
- Check any specified module conditions against your transcript.
- Submit supporting documents and wait for ACCA’s assessment.
- Review the exemption charges before accepting your study budget.
ACCA requires documentary evidence and charges for exemptions. Treat a university or tuition provider’s estimate as provisional until ACCA confirms the award.
An exemption can remove an exam without removing your need to refresh the subject. Before starting advanced reporting or financial management, review the underlying syllabus and attempt practice questions. If you are choosing a BBA in the UAE partly for future exemptions, check the exact programme rather than relying on its business-school branding.
Ethics and practical experience
The Ethics and Professional Skills Module is an interactive online component using realistic business situations. ACCA recommends completing it before attempting Strategic Professional exams. Make it part of your learning rather than leaving it as an administrative task after your final paper.
The Practical Experience Requirement, usually called PER, currently requires:
- 36 months of supervised experience in relevant accounting or finance work;
- nine performance objectives: all five Essentials and four Technical objectives;
- records in MyExperience and sign-off by your practical experience supervisor.
These are separate requirements: time served alone does not demonstrate completion of the objectives.
You can gain relevant experience before, during or after the exams. Discuss supervision early and keep records of actual responsibilities and completed work. Do not postpone the conversation until you leave an employer.

Taking ACCA exams in the UAE
ACCA currently lists both on-demand and session exams in the United Arab Emirates as centre-based. Online tuition therefore does not mean you can take the exam from home. Check the exam availability and booking page before arranging travel or purchasing an exam package.
On-demand and session exams
Applied Knowledge exams, seven foundation-level exams and certain Corporate and Business Law variants are available as on-demand computer-based exams. Other papers follow ACCA’s session timetable, with sessions in March, June, September and December. Variant availability is not identical in every session.
For on-demand exams, use ACCA’s licensed-centre directory and contact the centre about booking. For session exams, use ACCA’s exam-booking system. Confirm the paper, variant, location and booking deadline rather than assuming your classroom provider has reserved a seat.
Prepare with the current syllabus and specimen material for each paper. Practise answering on screen under timed conditions, not just reading solutions. Before exam day, check your booking confirmation, identification requirements, permitted equipment and arrival instructions.
Choosing tuition without relying on rankings
Start with ACCA’s Approved Learning Partner directory and guidance. ACCA assesses approved partners against teaching and support benchmarks. Verify the current listing rather than relying solely on a logo in an advertisement.
Then compare what you will actually receive:
- Paper and syllabus coverage: Which sitting and variant does the course prepare you for?
- Feedback: Are timed mock exams marked individually, with explanations?
- Tutor access: How are questions handled between classes?
- Delivery: Are recordings, missed-class arrangements and revision sessions included?
- Transition support: What happens if your studies extend into the redesigned qualification?
- Contract terms: What are the cancellation, deferral, resit and refund arrangements?
If a package also promises a university degree, investigate that award separately using the guide to checking UAE university and programme accreditation. Ask for the awarding institution and exact programme name before paying.
Budget before enrolling
Request an itemised quote separating tuition from ACCA registration, subscription, exam-entry, exemption and ethics-module charges. ACCA’s registration guidance links to its current fees; the ethics-module page also directs students to the applicable charge. Do not treat a tuition advertisement as the total cost of qualification.
Allow separately for materials, travel and possible resits. Keep control of your ACCA account and retain confirmations of registration, exemptions and exam bookings.
